Kevin Sharer - Director

Mr. Sharer served as CEO and Chairman of Amgen for 12 years. Amgen is the largest biotechnology company in the world, based in Thousand Oaks, California. Prior to becoming the CEO, Mr. Sharer served as President of Amgen for 8 years.

Before his tenure at Amgen, Mr. Sharer was Executive Vice President of business markets at MCI, General Manager of several GE business units and also on the Chairman’s staff. Mr. Sharer also spent some time working at the consulting firm, McKinsey & Company. Mr. Sharer served in the U.S. Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was on two nuclear fast attack submarines, and completed a tour as chief engineer of the newly constructed USS Memphis.

Mr. Sharer serves on the board of directors at 3M, Northrop-Grumman, Chevron, and California Institute of Technology. He is also Chairman of the Board at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.

Mr. Sharer joined the Harvard Business School faculty as a senior lecturer in the fall of 2012. He teaches the first year course on strategy.

Mr. Sharer studied aeronautical engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a B.S. in engineering and an M.A. He later received his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. Kevin is married and currently living in Cambridge, MA.


Lawrence Calcano - Director and Chief Executive Officer

Chief Executive Officer of i1 Biometrics Inc.

Mr. Calcano has spent a significant portion of his career working with growth Technology oriented companies from multiple vantage points, including as Chief Executive Officer, member of the Board of Directors, investor and outside financial advisor. Prior to i1 Biometrics, Lawrence Calcano worked at Bite Tech, Inc., a maker of athletic protective and performance oriented oral appliances, as Chairman and CEO for two and a half years. Preceding his position at Bite Tech, Calcano was at Goldman Sachs for almost seventeen years, where he became a Partner in the Investment Banking Division and served as Co-Head or COO of the firm’s Technology Banking Group (“the Tech Group”) from 1997 to 2006, and Head of the firm’s East Coast Technology Group beginning in 1993. Calcano has deep domain knowledge and deal experience working with startup and growth companies in technology, the internet, e-commerce and sports media. He has served as an adviser to the CEOs of many of the most exciting growth companies over the years and has worked on over $40 billion transactions of all types, including public and private financings as well as mergers and acquisitions. In addition, Calcano was named to the Forbes Midas List of the most influential people in venture capital in 2001 (the inaugural year), 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Calcano has served on the Boards of Directors for several companies over the years including 800Flowers, Freemarkets, Capital Acquisition Corp, ECI, Pivot Point Software and Bite Tech. Calcano also currently serves on the board of the Mental Health Association of NY, which manages the National Suicide Prevention Hotline and the newly implemented NFL Lifeline. At the MHA he works closely with the leadership team including the Chairman and President on issues related to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in the sports and military domains, as well as on other important initiatives.

Calcano was an analyst at Morgan Stanley for three years after graduating from Holy Cross College in 1985. He attended the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 1988 and graduated as a Tuck Scholar in 1990. He currently resides in Greenwich, CT with his wife and three children.


Andy Firlik, MD - Director

Dr. Firlik's career spans neurosurgery, entrepreneurship, and venture capital. He joined Foundation Medical Partners to concentrate on medical device, healthcare information technology, and connected health investments. Prior to Foundation, he was a venture partner at Sprout Group and Managing Director of its healthcare technology spinout, New Leaf Venture Partners. Previously, he was a principal at Canaan Partners. Dr. Firlik has led numerous venture capital investments and has served as a founder, founding investor, or director of many early stage companies that have grown to become successful market leaders.

Dr. Firlik was a founder and an inventor of the core technology platform of Northstar Neuroscience, a medical device company that pioneered a novel approach to neuromodulation for the treatment of stroke and other disorders. Northstar went public in an IPO in 2006 (NASDAQ: NSTR) and was subsequently acquired by St. Jude Medical. He recently served as the Chairman of Intelect Medical (acquired by Boston Scientific, NYSE: BSX), a neuromodulation company, and recently served as Chairman of NovaVision, a medical therapeutics firm focusing on neuroplasticity for visual disorders. His current or recent board seats include BridgePoint Medical (acquired by Boston Scientific Corporation, NYSE: BSX), Clear Catheter Solutions, Explorys, Functional Neuromodulation, i1 Biometrics, NeuroVista, SetPoint Medical, Spine Wave, Vertos Medical, and Visiogen (acquired by Abbott, NYSE: ABT). Dr. Firlik is a member of the Innovation Advisory Board atCleveland Clinic. He recently served as a member of the Administrative Board of the Cornell University Council and Chairman of its Technology Transfer Committee and also the Cornell University Biomedical Engineering Advisory Council and the Life Sciences Advisory Board.

Dr. Firlik spent 12 years in the healthcare profession during his medical training and practice as a neurological surgeon. He has published more than 50 articles in the medical literature, written chapters for several medical textbooks, and is the co-editor of a book about cerebrovascular surgery. His scientific work has been presented at many international conferences. He has been an inventor of numerous issued patents.

He studied biology at Cornell University and Oxford University, received his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, and his MD from Cornell University Medical College. As a board certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Firlik most recently served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the New York University School of Medicine.


Lee Wrubel, MD - Director

Dr. Wrubel has ten years of experience in venture capital and has been associated with a large number of private companies, including such now publicly traded companies as Pozen Pharmaceuticals, OraPharma, and GenVec. Prior to starting Foundation Medical Partners, Dr. Wrubel was an investment professional with Canaan Partners and more recently Highland Capital Partners, where he specialized in biotechnology and medical device investments. Dr. Wrubel serves on the board of directors of EndoGastric Solutions, Inc., CardioMEMS, Inc., IlluminOss and Circulite, Inc.

Dr. Wrubel began his business career as a consultant at The Wilkerson Group, a health care-focused management consulting company. Dr. Wrubel completed a pediatric internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He holds an A.B. from Lafayette College, an M.D. and Masters in Public Health from Tufts University, and an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

Dr. Wrubel serves on the Translational Research Advisory Committee of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, is a member of the Health Leadership Council of Save The Children and serves on the Board of Governors for the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum.


Brian Anderson - Director

Mr. Anderson joined GF Capital in 2007 and is responsible for originating new investment opportunities, conducting due diligence on new business opportunities, structuring transactions, and working with GF Capital portfolio companies.

Prior to joining GF Capital, Mr. Anderson was a Senior Vice President with Mansueto Ventures, a venture firm that owns and operates business themed websites and monthly periodicals, where he was responsible for the firm’s new venture initiatives.

Mr. Anderson was Head of Business Development at CNBC, NBC’s business-centric cable network. Mr. Anderson began his career as an investment banker, having the roles of Vice President in the Media and Entertainment Group at RBC Capital Markets and Associate at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette.

Mr. Anderson has earned a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School and a B.S. in Accounting from Indiana University.
