Why is a mouthguard a good place to measure impact?

i1 Biometric’s mouthguard fits tightly onto the upper teeth of the athlete. And because the upper teeth are rigidly attached to the skull, the mouthguard can accurately measure skull movement and calculate the acceleration and deceleration experienced by the brain.

Is the system intended to provide a diagnosis about the presence or absence of concussion?

The system is not intended for use as a diagnostic tool, particularly since individual instances of concussion occur under a wide range of external input conditions. No clear threshold for concussion has been established to date for any of the measured impact parameters.

Will the system prevent concussions?

The system will not prevent concussions, but it is a tool for sideline personnel to detect impacts athletes receive on the field of play.

Can the system tell when a player needs to be removed from a game?

No, but the data collected and the sideline assessment tools will allow sideline personnel to assess and evaluate if a player needs to be removed from the game. The system is not meant to replace the sideline personnel's judgment. It simply gives the sideline personnel more information to make a more informed decision.

Where does the data get stored? How is it being analyzed?

The player’s data is stored in a secure cloud-based database, and is analyzed using proprietary software.

Will the system work during practice?

Concussions do not only occur during games. The system also provides impact monitoring during contact drills. After the practice, the information gathered by the system can assist in identifying players that have sustained the hardest impacts so that they may be instructed on safer hitting and/or tackling techniques.

Has research and testing been conducted?

Yes, the i1 Biometrics Impact Technology has undergone rigorous research and testing in the laboratory and research is ongoing at leading universities and institutions

Does this mouthguard provide the same protection as other non-impact sensing mouthguards?
